Most people who book with us come for the water. But Charlotte is half an hour from the lake and worth at least one day of your trip, particularly if the forecast turns or you have teenagers who have had enough of the shoreline.
Morning: Uptown
Charlotte’s centre is called Uptown, not Downtown, and it is compact enough to walk. Discovery Place Science is the reliable choice with children: four floors of hands-on exhibits and an IMAX dome, and the single best rainy-day option in the city. The Mint Museum and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art sit within a couple of blocks of each other if your group skews older.
Lunch: 7th Street Public Market
A short walk from the museums, the market is a low-effort lunch with enough variety to keep everyone happy. Optimist Hall, a converted textile mill a little further out, does the same thing on a bigger scale.
Afternoon: pick your Charlotte
NoDa, the old North Davidson mill district, is murals, independent shops and a dense cluster of breweries. Plaza Midwood is scruffier and better for browsing. If you would rather be outdoors, Freedom Park is a proper city park with a lake and wide paths, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center out to the west turns an afternoon into rafting, climbing and zip lines.
Evening
Charlotte’s skyline is best seen from a rooftop with a drink in your hand, and Uptown has several. Go about an hour before sunset and you get the view twice, once in daylight and once when the lights come on. If there is a Panthers, Hornets or Knights game on, the stadiums are all in or beside Uptown and the atmosphere spills into the streets around them.
Getting in and out
The drive from Lake Norman is about forty minutes, from Lake Wylie about half an hour, and from our South Charlotte homes twenty minutes or less. Parking Uptown is straightforward but charged. If you plan an evening with drinks, the Blue Line light rail runs from South Charlotte into Uptown and takes the decision away.
