Getting to Charlotte is easy.

Getting from Charlotte to the right stretch of lake takes a little more thought, particularly if you are arriving late. Here is what you need to know.

Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Getting to Charlotte
Charlotte-Douglas International Airport

Flying in

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is one of the largest hubs in the United States, which is good news: direct flights from most of the country and a decent number from Europe. It sits just west of the city, so you are not fighting through Uptown to get out.

Rough drive times from the airport without traffic: about twenty minutes to Uptown Charlotte, twenty-five to thirty to our South Charlotte homes, around thirty to Lake Wylie, and thirty-five to forty-five to Lake Norman depending on how far north you are staying. Add half an hour to anything crossing the city between four and six on a weekday.

Driving in

Charlotte sits on I-77 and I-85, so most of the Southeast is within a comfortable day’s drive. I-77 runs north to south straight past Lake Norman and Lake Wylie, which makes both easy to reach. The stretch of I-77 north of Charlotte has express toll lanes. They are optional, and worth it at rush hour.

Do you need a car?

For the lakes, yes. Our lakefront homes are residential and there is no practical public transport. For a stay in South Charlotte you could manage with rideshares and the Blue Line light rail, but a car makes the trip easier and parking at our homes is free and off-street.

Arriving late

This is where booking direct with a local team helps. Most of our homes have keyless self check-in with 24-hour access, so a delayed flight does not become a problem. You get your code before you travel and let yourself in whenever you land. There is no desk to reach and nobody to meet.

One practical tip: shops near the lakes close earlier than you might expect. If you are landing after nine and want food in the house, stop on the way rather than after you have arrived.

Once you are here

Everything is close. Davidson and Cornelius are minutes from our Lake Norman homes, Belmont is minutes from Lake Wylie, and Uptown Charlotte is half an hour from either.

Browse our homes and pick your base, or book direct and tell us your arrival time so we can have everything ready.
