Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

Set on 380 acres beside Lake Wylie, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is where to go when you want a slow morning outdoors that still feels like an occasion. The formal gardens run through fountains, a canal walk and seasonal borders that change completely between visits, and there’s a glass conservatory of orchids for when the weather turns. Paths are wide, level and pushchair-friendly, which makes it one of the easier outings with small children or grandparents in tow, and it never feels crowded. Spring brings tulips and cherry blossom, summer the water lilies, autumn the ornamental grasses; December is worth a special trip for the holiday light display, though you’ll want tickets ahead. Allow two hours to walk it properly, longer if you stop for lunch at the café. Go early on summer mornings — there’s little shade in the formal gardens once the afternoon heat arrives. It’s about fifteen minutes from our Lake Wylie homes and half an hour from South Charlotte, and it pairs well with a wander round Belmont’s small, walkable Main Street afterwards.
