Discovery Place Science

When the forecast turns and the lake is off the table, Discovery Place Science is the outing that saves the day. It’s four floors of hands-on exhibits in the middle of Uptown — a large aquarium, a rainforest conservatory kept at proper tropical humidity, a physics floor built for pulling levers, and daily science demonstrations that are genuinely funny as well as educational. The IMAX dome theatre is worth timing your visit around; check the schedule when you book and work backwards. It holds the attention of children from about three upwards, and enough of it interests adults that nobody is just supervising. Allow three to four hours, more if you add a film. Book online for a timed entry slot — rainy Saturdays and school holidays are the busiest by some distance, and walking up on those days can mean queuing. Parking is easiest in the 7th Street Station deck a block away, or take the Blue Line and step off at 7th Street. Afterwards, the 7th Street Public Market next door is a low-effort lunch with plenty of choice for fussy eaters. Roughly 25 minutes from South Charlotte, 40 from Lake Norman.
