U.S. National Whitewater Center

Twenty minutes west of Uptown, the U.S. National Whitewater Center is the closest thing Charlotte has to a full day out in the mountains. It’s built around the world’s largest man-made whitewater river, and you can raft it whether or not you’ve held a paddle before — a guide rides in every boat. Beyond the water there are more than 1,300 acres of woodland threaded with mountain bike trails, a climbing centre, zip lines and a ropes course. If your group is split between thrill-seekers and people who’d rather sit with a drink and watch, this is the rare place that suits both: the deck above the rapids has a bar, live music most weekends and a clear view of everyone else doing the hard work. Buy the day pass rather than paying per activity, and book rafting slots ahead in summer, when they fill quickly. Parking is charged separately. Mornings are quieter and cooler; late afternoon is best if you’re mainly there for the music and the riverside deck. Allow about 35 minutes from our Lake Norman homes and 25 from South Charlotte.
